Crete By Bus: Navigating Bus Schedules in Greece

Chania/Western Crete

The central bus station in Chania (pronounced Han-ya) is located in the center of Chania town just off of the Chania harbor. It’s easily walkable to hotels, shopping, the port, and from the bus station, you can access the rest of the island, more popular beaches, and tourist destinations as well as the CHQ airport.

These bus schedules (“timetables”) change throughout the season so make sure you are looking at the correct schedule and dates. More buses run during the busy summer months than in winter.

The timetables for various destinations will look like this:

You can buy tickets online or at the station. Buses leaving the Chania bus station typically leave on time. The cost of tickets is relatively inexpensive and the buses are clean, have AC, and are well maintained. For reference, a ticket from Chania to Heraklion (a 2-3 hour trip) is about 14€.

Popular destinations in Western Crete: Elafonisi Beach, Samaria Gorge (longest gorge in Europe), Balos, Loutro, and more. Check out the Top Sights and Hidden Gems of Crete blog for more places to visit.

From the bus station you can navigate to other parts of Chania and to Heraklion where you can navigate to the eastern side of the island.
