Why September is the Best Month to Visit Greece
Why September is the Best Month to Visit Greece
One of the most common questions I get asked about travel is, "When is the best time to visit Greece?" While I’m a firm believer that there is no wrong time to visit Greece, there are some times that are better than others. There are several considerations you’ll want to make when planning a trip from weather to tourism to local holidays and events.
After visiting the country over half a dozen times, I think I’ve officially landed on September as my favorite month to Visit Greece. Here’s why:
1. The Weather is Perfect in Greece in September
In September, Greece (generally) has what many would consider to be the best weather of the year. The scorching summer heat is mostly gone, but the days are still warm, sunny, and beach-worthy. The weather is still nice through October and even November but it may be a roll of the dice when it comes to beach days after September.
Average temperatures range from 75°F to 86°F (24°C to 30°C ), making it perfect for activities, sightseeing, and outdoor dining. The evenings are comfortably cool, allowing for pleasant strolls and dinners by the sea without the intense heat.
It’s important (I’m speaking to you, Americanas) to take into consideration that the rest of the world, including modern Europe, does not do AC or ice in drinks like we do. When visiting in the hotter summer months, you will feel the difference! Praise the Lamb the Greeks practically invented iced coffee. FYI they didn’t but they certainly were ahead of the game when it comes to iced coffee. It’s a big part of the culture there.
2. There are Fewer Crowds in Greece in September
By September, peak tourist season has passed, which means fewer crowds (although still very busy) at popular attractions and beaches. This allows for a more easy going experience, whether you find yourself exploring ancient ruins, wandering through charming villages, or relaxing on the gorgeous beaches.
It’s definitely a different experience (and photo memory) when you have more space to enjoy iconic sites like the Acropolis in Athens and the scenic harbor in Chania.
To be clear though, there are definitely still tourists around this time of year and the trend I’ve been seeing the last few years (at least post-COVID) is that more people are starting to notice how great September in Greece is.
3. The Prices to Visit Greece are Generally Lower in September
With the high season behind, prices for accommodation, flights, and even some tours and activities tend to drop around September. This means you can enjoy the more for a lower cost.
Hotels, charming Airbnbs, and even some of the best restaurants are more affordable. The value for money during this time is one of the best-kept secrets of travel to Greece.
Although, like I mentioned, tides are starting to turn. With high season starting to extend into September this is also impacting prices in some areas but it’s still generally lower in September.
4. Warm Sea Temperatures
The Aegean, Ionian, and Sea pf Crete surrounding Greece remain warm well into September. This makes it an ideal time for swimming, snorkeling, diving, and other water activities. The crystal-clear waters are calm and inviting. You can even find pink sand at some beaches in Crete.
5. Harvest Season Finds
September is harvest season in Greece, which means an abundance of fresh, local produce. Vineyards are bustling with grape harvests, and you might even have the opportunity to participate in grape stomping events. Farmers' markets (“Laiki”) and restaurants showcase the best of the season, from juicy tomatoes and sweet figs to freshly pressed olive oil and local wines.
6. Festivals and Cultural Events
Greece's rich cultural heritage comes alive in September, with numerous festivals and events taking place around the country. The Athens and Epidaurus Festival continues into September, offering a range of performances, from ancient Greek drama to contemporary theater. Various local festivals celebrate the grape harvest, and you can find traditional music, dance, and food festivals in many towns and villages.
One of my favorites, the Athens Coffee Festival, also usually falls in September.
7. Stunning Natural Beauty
The natural beauty of Greece is at its peak in September. This is a great time for hiking and exploring Greece's stunning scenery, from the rugged mountains of Crete to the serene lakes of the Peloponnese. The mild weather makes outdoor activities more enjoyable and less strenuous without the heat.
Final Thoughts:
September in Greece is the perfect blend of great weather, fewer crowds, affordable prices, warm sea temperatures, seasonal events, culture, and natural beauty.
Whether want to relax on a beach, explore historical sites, or indulge in delicious Greek food, September is the ideal backdrop for an unforgettable Greek adventure.
